I. Appeal Process to Change Scheduled Final Exam Time

  1. Submit requested new exam time to instructor for approval.
  2. Obtain petition of signatures indicating agreement to change the exam to the requested time from every student enrolled in the class for which the exam is scheduled.
  3. Submit petition to instructor for approval. The petition will only be approved if every student enrolled in the class has indicated approval of the new examination time.
  4. If petition is approved by the instructor, a room in which to hold the examination at the new time must be obtained from and approved by the registrar. Submit the room location and the approval to the instructor.
Once the room location and approval for use obtained from the registrar has been submitted to the instructor by the student requesting the change in examination time, the exam shall be considered officially rescheduled.

This process must be completed at least one week prior to the last regularly scheduled class meeting of the course.

II. Final Exam Schedule Conflicts

A final exam schedule conflict shall exist when any one or more of the following apply to an individual student:

  1. Two examinations scheduled to begin at the same time.
  2. One examination scheduled to start before a previous examination is scheduled to end.
  3. More than two examinations scheduled on the same day.
In the event of a final exam schedule conflict, the individual student must alert the instructor of the conflict. The final examination of the individual student with the final exam schedule conflict may be rescheduled by the instructor without recourse to the Appeal Process outlined above.

Normally, one of the examinations considered in ``conflict'' will be rescheduled (for the individual student) to the time set aside by the school for Resolution of Schedule Problems. See the back cover of the current list of Saint Vincent College Day and Evening Courses for this time block.

Note that with the method of final exam scheduling used by St. Vincent College, (1) and (2) should never occur unless the final exam time for another course has been changed. In this case, the student should seek an alternate exam time from the instructor who has changed the final exam time rather than from the course in which the exam is being given at the official time.

III. Excuses Generally Considered ``Acceptable.''

The following is a summary of excuses which are generally considered ``acceptable'' with respect to the syllabus for purposes of attendance records, scoring missed regular exams, and rescheduling of final exams:

  1. Medical emergency involving the student (severe cold, infections, broken limbs, etc.).
  2. Family emergency involving the student (death in the family, etc.). Weddings are not an emergency situation.
  3. Course-related activities associated with the school for which the student will not be present at the class or final exam (sporting events, etc. with appropriate notice and forms from the activity director under which the student is participating). Note that excuses for sporting events must be submitted prior to the event and must be signed by the coach. Signatures copied on the form are not acceptable.
Other excuses may be considered on an individual basis at the discretion of the instructor and are much less likely to be considered ``acceptable.'' Examples of unacceptable excuses include:

Also note that family vacations are NOT considered acceptable excuses under any circumstances.
